Port Henry
This existing station is an example of a small town resilience hub. Port Henry has a population of 1,150. The town is along border with Vermont just across Lake Champlain. The station is along state route 9N. It is very short walk to the Amtrak train station that is midway between Albany and Montreal. The existing gas station and garage has 4 gas pumps and a convenience store.
Design goals:
Add to the existing station and convenience store to create a flexible space for the resilience hub.
Provide EV charging stations.
Design for regeneration with solar power added to the existing roofs and canopy.
Add landscaping and provide permeable paving.
The design is an addition to the existing station as a resilience hub that serves the town. A resilience hub is a community facility to support residents, coordinate communication and distribute resources. The hub could help respond to winter storms, extreme heat, food insecurity, power outages and enhance quality of life. The hub could also provide a clinic since the small town does not have a hospital or urgent care clinic. In this rural area the design provides a gradual transition, leaving the gas pumps available.
