Parkway

The Tappan site is west of the Hudson River on the Palisades Interstate Parkway just north of the New Jersey border. This type of station is unique to the northeast, where parkways were designed as scenic highways and restrict truck traffic. The station is in the center divider of the highway serving both directions. The existing gas station has 10 gas pumps and a convenience store.

Design goals:

  • Renovate the station to make it more comfortable for longer stays needed for charging.

  • Plan for electric car recharging.

  • Create a better connection with nature with landscaping and tree top views from the cafe.

  • Design for regeneration with solar panels added to the roof.

  • Design for additional rainwater detention and provide permeable paving.

This prototype could be applied to existing parkway stops across the northeast. This type of rest stop is evolving its design as electric vehicles are accommodated. Unfortunately these changes are often limited to adding a few charging stations without improving places to wait while charging. The original building has some additions that can be removed to provide the new elevated cafe above the charging stations since site area is limited., while preserving the original building as a convenience store. As with the Thruway service areas, local food and tourist information can be emphasized.
